Want to get to know your fellow club members a little better? Want to have a fun evening with fun games and great convo? If so, Speed Chat 2024 is where you need to be! Thursday, Feb. 22, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Arc of Hilo. No cost to attend. If you can, bring a pupu/finger food dish to share (optional). The club will provide the drinks. We have a LOT of new members who've become part of our Rotary family last year and so far this year. We don't always have a lot of time to get to know each other at regular meetings. Come join the Speed Chat event and spend time meeting and getting to know one another. Feel free to bring guests/potential members. This is a great way for them to see Rotarians in a casual, FUN setting! We'll see you there! Your Membership Committee

JOIN ROTARY CLUB OF HILO FOR LUNCH AND TO HEAR GUEST SPEAKER - Harvey Tajiri who will be speaking about the History of Hilo & the Big Island, and "Hawaii's Greatest Export". Harvey lived his entire life in Hilo except for when he attended UH Manoa and trained at Fort Lewis in Washington for Army Basic Training. He has 2 adult children and 2 grandsons. Prior to retirement, he owned several small businesses to include Tajiri Auto Repair, Tuff-Kote Rustproofing, Iseki Tractors Farm Equipment, Big Island Glass, Nani Mau Gardens gift shop, Denison's Omiyage shop, Ah Ping convenience store, Ando Store, Menehune Maintenance, Royal VSP Services, among others. He also served on our Hawaii County Council for 4 years as chair and finance chair and at the State Legislature representing District 2 (Hilo) for 10 years. Harvey was a volunteer in numerous community organizations to include Hilo Jaycees, Boy Scouts of America, American Cancer Society, Hilo Medical Center Advisory Board, Waiakea Settlement YMCA and Board of Regents. This is a Joint East Hawaii Rotary Club project to help improve the water quality at the ponds in Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. This effort will be making the Genki Balls which contain effective micro organisms that will later be tossed into the ponds. We will be meeting next Saturday 3/2 at the Kua O Ka La Charter School. Its a lot of fun and we will be collaborating with the 2 other Rotary Clubs in Hilo (South Hilo & Hilo Bay) and the Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset. Please join in the fun! |

We aim to keep it cozy with a maximum of 6 Rotarians, including ourselves, making it a total of 8 attendees. We believe this number is perfect for meaningful conversations and a chance to get to know each other better.
Please help us spread the word, and once we reach our limit of 6 attendees, we'll close the list. Each participant is kindly requested to cover their own dinner expenses.

**Garden Clean-Up Volunteer Day** We invite you to join us in enhancing the garden at Hawai`i Island Home for Recovery to provide residents with the opportunity to cultivate vegetables of their choosing. **Location:** HIHR Garden 444 Kapiolani Street **Activities:** Rain or shine, we will be working diligently to: - Remove tall California Grass tufts - Cover cleared beds with cardboard to combat weed growth **Tools to Bring:** Please bring the following tools: - Picks - Shovels - Weed whackers - Wheelbarrows - Rakes **Attire:** Wear gloves and dress appropriately for the weather. **Impactful Insight:** One of the HIHR Residents shared with us that gardening is therapeutic for his mental well-being. By participating, you contribute to "building GOODWILL that will be BENEFICIAL to all concerned." **RSVP:** Kindly let us know if you'll be joining and specify the tools you can bring. Brittany Zimmerman was camp manager for the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) this year and worked very hard to prepare for and put on the event along with other club members including Jen Tanouye, Kari Hoffman and Kazuo Todd and many others. Brittany joined Rotary Club of Hilo in March of 2023 and we're so fortunate to have her as a member of our club with her leadership, and brilliant ideas for helping our community with sustainability solutions. Every year our club has a Rotary Booth at Brewfest. At the booth, Rotarians share their excitement about Rotary and who we are, what we do. Any interested fill out a contact sheet and we invite them to a follow up event. This is a Membership Mixer. Its intention is to invite potential members to socialize and have them get to know Rotarians on a casual, relaxed setting. Rotarians and spouses are asked to pay $20 to attend - potential members are free. Please attend and support our club and BRING A POTENTIAL MEMBER! Perfect opportunity! It's also a great time to just have conversations (we are so busy at regular meetings) and get to know one another. |
