"Get The Drift & Bag It" is Waiakea High’s Interact Club and Rotary Club of Hilo’s contribution to the 25th Annual International Coastal Cleanup held on Saturday, September 15. This year 46 volunteers participated in the shoreline survey and cleanup from Wailoa river mouth shoreline to the Coconut Island road entrance and Liluokalani Park. Rotarian Ed Hara commented “It’s the only day on our planet that the trash that becomes marine debris that fouls our beaches and endangers our marine wildlife is picked up and counted in a survey.” In 2011, the #1 item found totaling 1,910,777 was cigarettes/cigarette filters - (we found 552 in the area we covered). #2 was Caps/Lids 1,131,647 (we found 106), #3 was Plastic beverage bottles 1,055,629 (we found 15), #4 was plastic bags 969,244 (we found 115), #5 was food wrappers/containers 940,277 (we found 180) We have to be careful of our aina, it cannot take care of itself!!!
